Sometimes I get stuck on a stock and can't let it go. I've been buying and selling Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) since the 90's, having great faith in their products. At one point before the bubble, I had my entire IRA in AMD stock and saw the share price go from around $50 to $9. In that instance, I stood pat, and a year later I'd made it through the crash at break-even, so no complaints. Last year, I bought AMD at $3.50 and sold it at $7.00. That would have made a great war story if the stock hadn't continued rising at breakneck speed into the $20's:-( AMD recently got within a nickle of $25, before a poor quarterly report knocked them down to $15 almost overnight. Recent rumors include the notion they may spin-off their flash memory business as being non-core. Nobody seems to remember that the blow-out earnings that got them started on their pre-bubble run-up were driven as much by flash memory for cell-phones as by Athlon CPU's. I bought 200 shares of AMD this morning at $17.13 after seeing a notice that they'll be presenting at an investors conference last week (big deal), but really because I wanted to get it back into the trading portfolio since it's such a hyperactive stock. It's a tough buy when money is hemoraging out of tech mutual funds at a rate of over a billion dollars a week, but I put on my salmon suit and went for it. The one that got away today was Nvidia (NVDA). I saw it up 10% in pre-market, and figure I'd follow my Radio Shack strategy and buy it during the post opening drop. The drop was so steep that I missed it while I was fooling around with AMD news, so instead of owning NVDA under $27 (it's floating around $28 a couple hours later). Sad to see I bought that AMD within a penny of the high for the day, but at least I'm still beating the index funds.
