Computer Repair with Diagnostic Flowcharts consists of 17 black&white flowcharts that will help you learn to think like a technician. There are no photographs or other illustrations, so it make a great companion for the extensively illustrated Build Your Own PC. The accompanying text gives details about each step of the flowchart, but there are no explanations of basic PC technology. The approach is geared to methodically eliminating possible failures to reduce needless expenditures and repeated steps. Start Your Own Computer Business doesn't paint a rosy picture of how you're going to get rich in the PC business, because you aren't. It offers real world advice about determining whether or not this is a practical business for you to pursue, and what problems you can expect to encounter along the way. However, the book is written with a sense of humor and includes a half dozen black and white cartoons.
The 4th edition of Build Your Own PC is fully illustrated with over 200 step-by-step photographs, detailing how to build a PC. Three complete example builds are given, including a 3.8 Ghz Socket 775 Pentium 4, with PCI Express video and DDR-2, an Athlon 64 with AGP 8.0 and SATA drives, and a standard Socket 478 Pentium 4. Basic PC technology purchasing decisions are also covered. Make sure you buy the 4th edition and not the 3rd edition, which comes up if you try Search Inside (they haven't updated it). The 17th edition of Mueller's classic weighs in at nearly six lbs and 1600 pages, so it doesn't qualify for free shipping. This book is considered a "must have" for PC technicians, as it covers (in great depth) both the history of PC's and current state of the technology. I wouldn't suggest buying every edition because the bulk of the material is the same, but if you've never owned one or haven't updated for a few years, it could be time.
